Several environmental conditions, such as aggressivesoil, use of dissimilar materials, and stray electricalcurrents, can cause metal water mains to corrode. This corrosion has been documented to occur as soon asfive years after a metal water main has been installed. Theauthors explore various ways utilities around the worldattempt to protect their ductile-iron water mains fromleaks and breaks. Protective methods include coating, wrapping, or some form of cathodic protection. Duringthe course of their research, the authors learned that thesuccess or failure of a given protective method oftendepended on a specific set of circumstances. They learnedthat corrosion engineers, utilities, and pipe manufacturershave distinctive schools of thought about which methodprovides the most protection. Because of the variety ofexperiences reported by professionals in the water industry, the authors recommend that a comprehensive studybe performed under a variety of conditions to help determinewhich protective method works best with ductile-ironpipe for a specific environment. Includes 55 references, tables, figures.
