The need to recycle water is a growing issue inwater-poor areas of the United States and aroundthe world. However, certain pathogens, such asCryptosporidium, can be present in recycled water andpose a danger to human health. This article describes arecent project that was conducted to explore efficientways to eliminate the threat posed by Cryptosporidiumin microfiltration residuals. After reviewing the variousmethods to treat microfiltration residuals, the authorsfocused their research on clarification for several reasons that include: clarification wassuccessful in treating spent filter backwash waterfrom conventional wastewater treatment plants;clarification was economical; and, clarification was familiar to U.S. plant operatorsand regulators.
