Hospitals are often required to disinfect their watersystems to protect individuals from contractinghospital-acquired Legionnaires' disease. Theauthors of this article recently studied one Pennsylvaniahospital that adopted a chlorine dioxide (ClO2) systemto disinfect its water supply across the 23 buildings thatcomprise the hospital complex. After reviewing thevarious disinfection alternatives, ClO2 was considered acost-effective approach given that ClO2 generatorscould treat the 23 buildings from one central location.Complete eradication (0% positivity) of Legionella wasachieved after 1.75 years, and no cases of Legionnaires'disease were reported during this time.The use of ClO2 to treat a hospital's water supply isnot common in the United States; however, it has beenused in European hospitals. After the ClO2 system wasinstalled in 2002, the authors studied the system toevaluate its efficacy in controlling Legionella, determinewhether an effective residual could be maintainedthroughout the distribution system, provide data thatother facilities could use, and assist the hospital withmaximizing the system.
