Although chlorine dioxide and ozone are good disinfection agents, the health effects of their reaction products are not completely understood. The chlorite ion produced by chlorine dioxide and oxidized organic compounds resulting from ozonation may be toxic. Until or unless these substances are identified and their safety demonstrated, neither chlorine dioxide or ozone should be substituted for chlorine in water disinfection. Includes 18 references.
