Utilities expend significant time, effort, and money to treatwater to a high standard. But within the distribution system, thatquality water may deteriorate over time if storage tanks areunder utilized or have poor mixing characteristics. In this research, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, water temperature measurements, and chlorine residual measurementswere used to determine mixing characteristics withinstorage tanks, identify tanks with poor mixing (and thus the greatestpotential for water quality deterioration), and help modifydesigns to improve mixing characteristics. Field data demonstratedhow modifications improved water mixing in an operatingstorage tank. Results of this study should boost confidence in the use ofCFD modeling and field temperature measurements as efficientmethods of assessing and improving water quality within distributionsystem storage tanks. System managers can use thesetools to further their knowledge of how water ages in their ownstorage systems and ultimately take steps to ensure that thewater they supply maintains its high quality from treatmentto tap.
