Aqueous suspensions made from Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash, which fell in Pullman, Washington, on May 18, 1980 were characterized in terms of pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, turbidity, settleable solids, and fluoride content. Plain sedimentation followed by coagulationflocculation successfully reduced the turbidity and fluoride content of the ash suspensions at two alkalinity concentrations and two volcanic ash levels. Ash composition, deionized water, and alum addition are discussed. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
