Riverbank filtration (RBF) refers to the naturalfiltration of microbial matter through an aquifermatrix of sand and gravel. Before this study, RBF hadgained only limited acceptance as a primary filtrationprocess for Cryptosporidium removal to comply withthe Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.Recently, USEPA and the Central Wyoming RegionalWater System (CWRWS) in Casper, through aprocess of negotiation and continued cooperation, developed an evaluation study to demonstrateremoval of Cryptosporidium using RBF. The studydemonstrated that aquifers composed of sand andgravel can remove Cryptosporidium-sized particles aseffectively as engineered filtration systems, includingslow sand filtration and conventional treatment. Includes 19 references, tables, figures.
