The promulgation of such regulations as the InterimEnhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR)and the Long Term 2 ESWTR (LT2ESWTR) haspointed out the need for methods to compare the relativeefficacy of treatment alternatives for removingCryptosporidium during drinking water treatment.Until recently, little was known about Cryptosporidiumremoval by filtration during nonideal operatingperiods. Furthermore, with the exception of formalin-inactivatedoocysts, no reliable, quantitative surrogatefor live oocysts has been demonstrated for a variety ofoperational conditions and filtration regimes in thepeer-reviewed literature. This article consolidates andupdates the available information on Cryptosporidiumremoval by filtration, with a focus on optimal andsuboptimal filtration performance. Includes 83 references, tables.
