A study of the distribution system in Davenport,Iowa, suggests that monitoring for coliphages canhelp water providers detect viral intrusion resultingfrom main breaks. In this research, occurrence ofcoliphage in the distribution system was associatedwith wintertime main breaks. Low temperatures anduse of chloramines, to which coliphages are resistant, aided in the survival and transport of the virus.Coliphage-testing is a simple assay that can provideinformation on virus intrusion and survival in drinkingwater systems, an issue of potential public healthconcern. Coliphages could prove an effective indicatorof contamination from main breaks; the organisms'resistance to chloramines makes them particularlysuited for use in chloraminated systems, animportant consideration given the growing trendtoward use of chloramines to control disinfection byproducts.
