Since 2004, AWWA has conducted the State of theIndustry survey to take the pulse of the water industry,compiling detailed and comprehensive data about criticalissues and concerns. This year, more than 2,000utility representatives, service providers, and otherprofessionals in the United States and Canada contributedto the 2006 survey.Respondents rated the top five critical issues facingthe industry as infrastructure, regulatory factors, businessfactors, source water supply and protection, andworkforce. This was the first time that workforceissues, i.e., retaining and replenishing water industrypersonnel, edged into the top five, with many respondentsciting it as an inadequately addressed area.Meanwhile, security concerns have declined steadilyover the three years of the survey.AWWA gathers this information annually to help itsmembers and the water community identify overarchingconcerns, overlooked issues, and the soundness ofthe industry. With these data, the industry can reviseand fine-tune its agenda to help ensure its continuedgrowth and success. Includes tables, figures.
