A number of mathematical models have been developedover the past century to represent thedose-response curve of a microbial population exposedto a disinfectant. Beginning with the Chick-Watsonmodel and continuing through the Gard, Hom, anddelayed Chick-Watson models, these representationshave in common their foundation on the concept thatthe interaction between a microorganism and a disinfectantis a kinetic process similar to that betweenchemicals undergoing a reaction. The author reviews the development of these modelsand proposes an alternative interpretation based on thediversity of the microbial population in its resistance toa disinfectant. If additional research confirms its validity, this hypothesis should help explain the variabilityseen in microorganisms' responses to a specific disinfectant.A better understanding of how microorganisms areinactivated will assist utilities in complying with regulatoryrequirements and may lead to improved engineeringdesigns for meeting those requirements.
