Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in watershedsmay react with disinfectants to form carcinogenic, nitrogenous, disinfection byproducts. However, despitethe potential significance of DON-mediated reactions, asystematic study has not been conducted for DONoccurrence or removal during water treatment. Two seasonal sampling campaigns of raw andfinished waters from 28 water treatment plants in theUnited States were conducted to quantify the occurrenceand removal of DON. A new dialysis-basedpretreatment method that removes dissolved inorganicnitrogen, followed by a high-temperature combustionanalytical method, was used to measure DON.Results demonstrated that average observed DONconcentrations were 0.19 mg/L nitrogen for rawwaters and 0.15 mg/L nitrogen for finished waters, making the high-temperature oxidation techniquedescribed in this article suitable for widespread use inthe drinking water industry. Results alsodemonstrated that water treatment plants removeapproximately 20% of DON and that adding polymerand ozonation aid in its removal. Includes 30 references, tables, figures.
