Water main break data are essential for undertakinginformed infrastructure asset management. Anapproach for constructing break and general networkdata from multiple sources and relating and linkingsuch data is presented here. The approach incorporatesdata from a number of sources and augmentsthe amount of data available while maintaining existingdata warehousing practices. Although it requireseffort and collaboration among a utility's informationtechnology and engineering staff, the approach isflexible; uses commonly available software tools;anticipates the evolution of data collection, verification, and storage capabilities within the utility; and,can be applied to other infrastructure assets. With theresults, utility managers can gain insight into currentand future performance of their distribution networksand develop future asset management strategies. Asan example, the approach is applied to a portion ofthe water distribution network of the District ofMaple Ridge, B.C., Canada. Includes 24 references, tables, figures.
