The contaminants identified on the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency's Contaminant Candidate Listare a natural focus for monitoring by utilities, industry, government, and academicians. If contaminants arechosen that are not of real concern, then resources willbe wasted monitoring these contaminants whilecontaminants of real concern are left unchecked.Prioritizing contaminants for monitoring and forconsideration as candidates for regulation is complex. Both occurrence and health effects data must be factoredinto the decision. Often, data for unregulatedcontaminants are scarce and difficult to interpret. An understandable and repeatable process is necessaryin order to effectively assess, organize, summarize, and use available data to prioritize contaminantsfor further monitoring and regulation. Significantprogress has been made in mining and organizingthe available data, however the classification ofcontaminants of potential concern still needs anunderstandable approach. The method proposed here will allow all stakeholdersto visualize and understand the relative priority ofcontaminants that are of possible concern to the drinkingwater industry.
