The presence of lead particles in tap water is an under-appreciatedcause of lead poisoning in the United States.Routine water sampling procedures can "miss" leadparticles present in drinking water. Consequently, thetrue extent of human exposure through this type of leadcontamination can be underestimated. The authorsdescribe recent cases of lead poisoning in Washington,D.C., Greenville, North Carolina, and Durham, North Carolina, whenapproved water sampling procedures did not show causefor alarm. Also, the authors compare the bioavailabilityof lead particles when ingested to their detection in drinkingwater samples and, in turn, compare human exposureto what utilities detect in water samples. Their findingsreveal the potential limitations in current lead detectionmethods. This information can be used to improve currentwater sampling and preservation procedures. Includes 39 references, tables, figures.
