With increasingly stringent environmental regulationsto comply with, many small utilities are facingsevere operational challenges due to lack of expertiseand resources. This article addresses these challenges byillustrating an advanced automatic water treatmenttechnology, the artificial neural network (ANN), suitable for small water utilities to deliver high-qualitydrinking water.ANN control technology has matured throughrecent research and development. In addition, thecombination of ANN control technology withremote monitoring technology creates an even morepowerful tool for small water utilities to share watertreatment expertise through centralized technicalsupport.ANN process control technology is capable ofproducing stable and robust real-time control in afull-scale water treatment plant. Small utility managersnow have an additional option with which tooptimize their water treatment process, reduce chemicalcost, and expertly run plant operations to complywith stringent regulations. Includes 11 references, tables, figures.
