This article presents the findings of research comparingtwo modes of water supply, continuous watersupply (CWS) versus intermittent water supply (IWS), in distribution systems in four cities in India. This realisticappraisal of the behavior of water distributionsystem design parameters, including pressures, percapita consumption, and peak factors during these twomodes of water supply, taking into account the intangiblesassociated with the two systems, indicates thatthese parameters remain within the design limits duringCWS. A high peak factor during IWS affects pressureand flow in the distribution system. IWS practice doesnot promote public hygiene and is, therefore, not recommendedfrom the standpoint of public health safetyas well as consumer convenience and satisfaction. Shiftingto a CWS mode provided that the water system ismetered and that nonrevenue water is within a permissiblelimit is recommended. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
