The combination of preozonation with a conventionaltreatment process may effectively remove organics, especially trihalomethane formation potential, witha lower risk of bromate formation. Preozonation hasbeen applied at some water utilities. However, studieson preozonation, especially the combination of preozonationand ozone-biological activated carbon havebeen minimal. It is unclear how the combination ofozone-related processes can be optimized. The majorconclusions of this research can help water utility managerschoose operation parameters and suitable treatmentprocesses to remove organic matter while controllingbromate. Many utilities are faced with complyingwith the Stage 2 Disinfectants/Disinfection ByproductsRule in the near future, and this information may behelpful in choosing among treatment alternatives. Includes 18 references, figures.
