Although each water utility must plan, organize, and implement its own preventive maintenance program, certain general concepts must be understood by managers if they are to avoid costly breakdowns in equipment. Methods of instituting a formal program are discussed as well as the operational, financial, and managerial benefits that accrue from a well-conceived maintenance program. Specific maintenance techniques used by the New Haven Water Company include oil and vibration analysis, pipe cleaning and cement lining, standpipe cleaning, and regular filter changes. Includes 12 references.
