This study set out to quantify the contributions ofsubsurface filtration (or underground passage) andgroundwater dilution to overall reductions/removals byriverbank filtration (RBF). Samples were collected fromfour RBF study sites that varied in terms of distancebetween river sources and extraction wells, river waterquality, hydrology, well construction and pumpingrate, and subsurface material.Samples were analyzed for removal of dissolvedorganic carbon, total coliforms, aerobic spore-formingbacteria, and virus indicators. Results indicated thatthe relative contribution of each removal mechanismwas site-specific. Both groundwater dilution and subsurfacefiltration appeared to be importantreduction/removal processes.Within the United States, RBF is a relatively unfamiliardrinking water treatment. The findingspresented here indicate that RBF can be effective asboth a primary treatment and a pretreatment processand can significantly improve the quality of river waterin terms of particulates, organic precursors, and microbialremovals.
