Ductile-iron pipe employed in water distribution systems usually bears a seal coating of petroleum asphalt that is in direct contact with the water. Experimental evidence designed to simulate a "worstcase" scenario suggests that no significant contribution of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons to piped water should be expected from a relatively freshly seal-coated pipe. The total concentration of the six PAH examined was less than 1 ng/L, compared to the WHO recommended maximum concentration of 200 ng/L. Includes 7 references, tables, figures.
