Many communities across the United States andaround the world are experiencing, or will experience,water supply shortages. This article discusses Queensland,Australia's holistic approach to the problem andwill help utilities better understand state-of-the-artwater reclamation and recycling. Queensland's range ofsolutions to water shortages includes high-technologyequipment and effective public communications resultingin high levels of public support and "belt tightening"conservation. Part of Queensland's multifacetedapproach is the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project,one of the world's largest high-technology waterrecycling projects. The program involves applyingmicro- and ultramembrane filtration, reverse osmosis,and advanced oxidation to provide potable-qualitywater for industrial use at major power plants, irrigationof, and, if needed, augmentation of the community'ssource water reservoir. Effective public communicationshave led to public support, which has been a keyto success. Survey results for 2007 show that 71% ofresidents supported recycled water use and have successfullyconserved water, with a per capita residential useof only 32 gpd (123 L/d), likely one of the best watersaving communities in the developed world. Queensland'sexperience may help other communities understandthe range of options that are available. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
