Transient test-based campaigns for leak detection inpipe systems are attractive because they are quick andinexpensive. When dealing with real pipe systems, frequentchallenges occur stemming from the poor availabilityof suitable contact points and valves for generatingtransient tests. Key concerns involve accessibility of contactpoints and device maneuverability. Thus, there is aneed for a portable and easy-to-use device that does notentail overly sophisticated support instrumentationbeyond that required for registering the pressure signal. This research examines a portable pressure wavemaker(PPWM) device that has been refined andtested at the water engineering laboratory in theDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineeringat the University of Perugia, Italy. The authors discusshow the PPWM works, the best way to arrange it toexecute transient tests in order to have a good-qualitypressure signal, and the amplitude of the producedpressure wave for given device conditions and pipecharacteristics.
