Growth and development in northern Colorado areresulting in the need to seek out alternative watersources. Agricultural water supplies, provided in theform of secondary water systems, make an attractivealternative. Urban water managers responsible forsupplying water to growing communities can benefit bytaking advantage of traditional agricultural supplies, without putting agriculture out of business.Such systems offer continued viability of agriculturalcanal systems, use the water rights historicallydecreed for irrigation for use in urban landscapes, and reduce the landscape-driven demand on potablewater supplies. These systems are a benefit for all involved. Formunicipalities, allocating nonpotable water for landscapeuse reduces the volume of water that needs to betreated to potable standards. This reduces the cost oftreatment and delays the need for expanding treatmentfacilities.
