A carbon footprint (CF) analysis is the sum of theestimated carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions associated with a particular activityor industry. Without a standardized protocol fordeveloping a CF of water production, U.S. utilitiesmust draw on the experiences of other nations andadapt approaches used in other industries. In the United Kingdom, mandatory regulation ofemissions for large industry has spurred collaborativedevelopment of CF methods for the water industry.British and Australian utilities are conducting CFanalyses and using this information to betterunderstand the environmental impact of their waterproduction.First, various utility activities are defined, informationabout power and potential GHG emissions isgathered, and the GHGs are converted to carbon dioxideequivalents to create a CF assessment. The utilitycan then use this baseline CF as a management tool toguide decisions about sustainable operations and constructionprojects as well as future resources and treatmentand transmission facilities.
