Iron-modified granular activated carbon (GAC) andzero-valent iron (ZVI) have been shown to be effectivefor arsenic (As) adsorption, but they both havestrengths and shortcomings. In this research, GAC andZVI were combined in an innovative As adsorptionsystem that shows significant potential for removal ofAs in drinking water systems. Results of rapid small-scale column tests indicatedthat an optimum combination of GAC and ZVIremoved As to meet the US standard of 10 µg/L whileproviding a cost-effective way of increasing the bed lifeof GAC. Further studies are needed to determinewhether laboratory results can be extended to fullscaleapplication and other water sources. This work represents a promising approach toremoving As, especially for water providers thatalready have GAC systems installed. Rather thaninstalling new processes for As removal, utilities maybe able to adapt their current systems to meet the regulatorychallenge. Includes 27 references, tables, figures.
