Although many nitrification control options exist, nitrification continues to challenge water utility operators. The industry lacks a useful tool to help waterutilities select the most appropriate nitrification controlstrategy for their systems. The nitrification potentialcurve approach described in this article helps utilitiesassess their current operations and make informeddecisions about the most appropriate strategies to preventfuture nitrification. In this research, nitrification potential curves weredeveloped for three, full-scale chloraminated distributionsystems. The curves were then used to evaluate thenitrification control strategies being used for each systemand show how operational changes such as reducingwater age or increasing pH could affect nitrificationpotential.Nitrification potential curves help to optimize theoperation of chloraminated distribution systems. Ifmore effort is put into preventing nitrification, lesseffort will be required to implement more expensivereactionary strategies such as breakpoint chlorinationor unplanned flushing.
