Microorganisms are dynamic in nature and able towithstand adverse environmental conditions by formingbiofilms. Previous studies on biofilms have focusedon drinking water distribution systems. However, biofilms also occur in domestic plumbing systems.Several factors including temperature, pipe material, water velocity, and disinfectants influence biofilmformation in plumbing systems. This article provides a review of the current literaturerelated to the analysis of biofilms found or producedin domestic plumbing systems and highlightsthe microorganisms identified as well as causes andstrategies for control. More research is required inthis field, and the results should be applied wheninstalling domestic plumbing materials. Although thisinformation will not affect water utility operations, itwill allow utilities to provide advice to theircustomers. In addition, this information will raiseregulatory awareness that samples taken atcustomer's taps are not necessarily a true reflection ofwhat is in the water supply, because biofilms may bepresent.
