The treatment technologies discussed in this articleexplore the removal of compounds of emerging concern(CECs). There are no regulations currentlyrestricting CECs, but with the recent media attentionand increasing public awareness of the issue, as well asimproving technology to detect these substances, regulationsmay be on the horizon. The future regulatoryscenarios to address these CECs will be of most interest toutility managers.There are several source control alternatives as wellas treatment technologies that can help to reduce CECconcentrations in drinking water. This article summarizesthe effects, removal, and regulatory responses toCECs and outlines where more research is needed.Water utilities are encouraged to begin planning forlong-term upgrades and policies to address CECs. Inaddition, the authors encourage cooperation betweenwater and wastewater utilities. Includes 16 references, tables, figure.
