Utilities face new challenges as they strive to complywith multiple, simultaneous regulations aimed atenhancing drinking water quality. For example, manyutilities must comply with regulations for both corrosioncontrol and residual disinfection. Today utilitiesare considering converting from free chlorine to chloraminesfor greater residual stability and better compliancewith the Total Coliform Rule as well as the morestringent requirements of the Disinfectants/DisinfectionByproducts Rule. This article identifies several keyissues for predicting the effects of disinfectant changeon lead and copper corrosion and release into drinkingwater supplies based on information currently availablein the literature. The key issues associated with achange in disinfectant that potentially could affectcorrosion and lead and copper release in drinkingwater systems are identified in order to provide a betterunderstanding of potential water quality effects associatedwith a change in disinfectant. This informationcan help utilities assess their systems' potential risk oflead and copper release after implementing a change indisinfectant. Includes 79 references, figures.
