Accurate and representative measure of treatmentsystem performance in removing Cryptosporidiumdepends on the nature of the surrogate. This research wasundertaken to assess the performance of two point-of-use(POU) systems in removing microbial contaminants andto evaluate appropriate surrogates for Cryptosporidiumremoval in POU systems with charged media. The POU devices tested achieved virtually completeremoval of microbial contaminants and satisfied the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency requirements ofmicrobial purifiers for Escherichia coli and viruses. Inaddition, results showed that Bacillus subtilis sporeswere a more reasonable and effective conservative surrogatefor Cryptosporidium removal than were polystyrenelatex beads for separation systems that functionpredominantly on charge mechanisms. Furthermore, the spores offer the advantages of being easy to separateand quantify. Given the expensive and time-consuminganalytical techniques for Cryptosporidium, utility managers will want to select the most appropriatesurrogates to evaluate the performance of treatmentsystems.
