Increasingly stringent drinking water regulationsare leading the drive toward more efficienttreatment technologies. These new treatmenttechniques alter the quality (chemistry) of water, resulting in complex interactions between waterand distribution infrastructure that may exacerbatepipe deterioration. In this research, experts from various disciplinesin the drinking water industry participatedin a survey and workshop to identify themost pressing research needs for reducing theeffects of changing water chemistry on distributioninfrastructure. The resulting list of researchpriorities offers a roadmap for conductingfuture research.Different utilities have different research needsbased on the specific applicability of regulationsand use of different treatment processes and infrastructurematerials. The authors propose an innovativeframework -- a hierarchical relationshipmodel -- by which utilities can evaluate the consequencesthat planned changes in treatment processesmay have on their existing infrastructure. The same water can have different effects on differentmaterial, and these conflicting effects canalso be evaluated using the method. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
