Utility managers are charged with providing safeand reliable water services to current and futurecustomers. Sustainability has emerged as an influentialutility strategy that guides the organization'splanning and development of approaches to servingtheir customers' day-to-day and long-term needs.These sustainability strategies improve resourceefficiency, direct long-term investment strategies,and reduce implementation risks.The article describes a wide range of technologiesand programs that can be considered whenadapting a portfolio of strategies to include themost cost-effective and easily implementedapproaches for delivering safe and reliable servicesto water utility customers. By considering the fullwater cycle and the capability of emerging technologiesto cost-effectively treat marginal-qualitywater sources, the water manager is more likely tosuccessfully navigate the public and political interactionsthat are an integral part of successful utilityplanning and ensure more reliable sources of waternow, and in the future.
