The National Science Foundation has predicted ashortage of 70,000 engineers by 2010. Yet, engineersare needed more than ever to come up with novel solutionsto reconcile the ever-increasing demands on waterresources. Through community outreach activities, today's engineers can become role models for middleschool and high school students, encouraging them notonly to become powerful stewards of water quality andconservation, but also to inspire the students to becometomorrow's engineers. Little information has beenavailable, however, on how to interact effectively withstudents and keep them engaged during classroomvisits and field trips. This article provides engineering firms and wateragencies with guidelines that have been proven effectivefor conducting outreach activities in a classroom or at aworksite. The authors provide field trip schedules, ahands-on activity to design and build a water filter, scavengerhunt/tour ideas, and sample questions to help stimulateinteraction among students and role models.
