Amino acids (AAs) are known precursors to regulatedand unregulated disinfection byproducts(DBPs). Nitrogenous DBPs are of concern in thedrinking water industry because they can be moregeno- and cytotoxic than many of the currently regulatedcarbon-based DBPs. The authors measuredoccurrences and removals of AAs in raw water andfilter effluents from 16 full-scale drinking water treatmentplants that treat water impaired by upstreamwastewater discharge or algal growth. The AAs measuredin this study accounted for only a small portionof the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) pool andwere removed, to a high degree, during drinkingwater treatment.This work illustrates that although amino acidscan account for a more significant portion of theDON pool in natural lakes and streams, the influenceof wastewater discharge and algal activityproduce a pool of organic nitrogen not likely toaccount for all of the nitrogenous DBPs. Thisunidentified DON warrants identification and furtherstudy. Includes 61 references, table, figures.
