Other than data on the targeted oxidized compoundsnitrate and perchlorate, there is limitedinformation on how water quality parameters areaffected by membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) treatment. In order to assess challenges for MBfR fieldapplication, the authors investigated the nontargetedoxidized compounds sulfate and chlorate, the hydrogen(H2) concentration in the effluent, possible undesiredreduction products when H2 is an electrondonor, changes in dissolved organic carbon and biodegradabledissolved organic carbon, and the interactionsamong pH, alkalinity, hardness, and calciumcarbonate precipitation. Results indicated that eitherthese parameters presented no problems or problemscould be easily prevented.Removal of oxidized contaminants, particularlynitrate and perchlorate, is one of the industry'sbiggest emerging challenges. Biological reductionusing an MBfR offers a simple means of reliably andcost-effectively achieving this goal. This study demonstratedthat water providers should be able toapply MBfR treatment for removing oxidized contaminantswithout introducing other water qualityproblems. Includes 11 references, table, figures.
