Nitrification can have a range of effects onthe corrosion of different pipe materials. Previousresearch has reported possible linksbetween certain corrosion problems and nitrification, but there are very few studies directlyquantifying this link, and only a few pipematerials have been examined. The goal of this study was to examine theeffects of nitrification on a wide range of pipematerials and the possible mechanisms bywhich nitrification affects corrosion. Thisresearch found that nitrification can increaselead release by reducing pH, but had no effecton corrosion of concrete pipe, and actuallydecreased zinc release from galvanized ironpipe by reducing dissolved oxygen levels.Although there are instances in which nitrificationinfluenced contamination of water bylead and copper pipe, and it is believed thatnitrification can sometimes hasten certain corrosionprocesses, in general the affects of nitrificationon distribution systems was slight. Includes 40 references, tables, figures.
