To investigate the effect of ultraviolet (UV)treatment on the subsequent formation ofregulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts(DBPs), two sets of water sampleswere submitted to low-pressure (LP) andmedium-pressure (MP) UV disinfection. Results indicated that germicidal doses of UVlight, both LP and MP, did not substantiallyaffect the tendency of the test waters to formtrihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, or totalorganic carbon under conditions typical ofdrinking water treatment. However, MP UVtreatment did lead to increased concentrationsof chloropicrin and trichloropropanone atrates consistent across the water samples andUV doses tested.Although some minor DBPs were enhancedby pretreatment with MP UV, the final concentrationsremained small. Nonetheless, given the elevated risk of halonitromethaneformation with MP UV disinfection anduncertainties about the toxicology of suchcompounds, utilities - especially those usingwaters high in nitrate - may want to choosetheir UV technologies in order to effectivelybalance disinfection and DBP control.
