This article discusses the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) new regulatory strategy that could ultimately change thedrinking water regulatory process asmuch as the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendmentsdid. This new strategycan be implemented without creatingnew amendments to the SDWA. This article discusses the four major points that comprise the new strategy: address contaminants ingroups, in addition to individually,with the goal of achieving enhancedprotection of public health morecost-effectively; foster development of newdrinking water technologies toaddress health risks posed by abroad array of contaminants; use the authority of multiple statutesto protect drinking water; and, partner with states to developshared access to all public water systemmonitoring data.
