Most chloraminated water distributionsystems experience accelerated chloramineloss after the onset of severe nitrification. Itis commonly believed that nitrification(largely the nitrite and pH changes inducedby nitrification) is the major cause ofchloramine loss. The experiments describedin this article showed that nitrite and pH orother known mechanisms are not sufficientto explain the decay observed in severelynitrifying bulk waters. By separating themicrobial and chemical decay using themicrobial decay factor method, the authorsfound that an unknown mechanism - suspected to be soluble microbial products - was responsible for acceleratedchloramine decay.It is necessary to understand the basicmechanisms of accelerated chloramine decayin nitrified waters before control mechanismsare implemented. The findings of this studysuggest that water providers dealing withaccelerated chloramine decay should targetthe production and control of soluble microbialproducts released by microbes in additionto nitrification.
