With an ever-increasing number of peopleliving within 50 miles of low-lying coastalareas such as Florida, New York, and theCarolinas, sea level rise is putting significantstrains on water supply and wastewaterdisposal practices. Water utilities need toplan for the effects of sea level rise on watersupply sustainability and ancillary programsfor storm water and wastewater disposal.Groundwater level rise resulting from sealevel rise would create significant challengesto a utility's plans for new wells, aquiferrecharge, hydrologic barrier programs, andreclaimed water programs.A comprehensive water evaluation isneeded in order to ensure that water is usedto gain the greatest benefit without duplicativecosts for infrastructure. Future watersupply plans and integrated water plans willneed a sea level component in coastal areas.
