Many laboratory studies have been performedon particle and microbe removalusing a standard filter protocol with no crossflow of water across the filter bed. Thisstudy was conducted to better understandthe effect on filtrate quality when cross flowdoes occur across the filter bed. Larger suspendedparticles tend to settle in a stream oron a beach toward the bed, resulting in aconcentration of larger-sized particles oversmaller ones. Larger microbes such asCryptosporidium tend to concentrate in thestreambed (assuming similar density characteristics)versus smaller microbes such asEscherichia coli. As stream flow or waveaction increases toward turbulent flow conditions, the impact of this sorting decreasessignificantly. Understanding the importanceof flow helps to better select sites for riverbankand seabed infiltration and helps determineflow characteristics in engineered filteredsystems with cross flow.
