The evolution of facility automation can be viewed as both the increased use of more intelligent and automated equipment, and the maturing of the hardware and software systems supporting process automation. Combined, these elements have supported fast-paced evolution in both the capabilities of facility automation systems, and their reliability. However, as we have focused on technology automation,as a means of reducing staff, we have lagged behind in understanding its impact on the diminished staff of the utility, and its operation. Automation seldom replaces the applications or locations from which critical information must still be collected. This paper discusses the integration of facility automation and information management.
