King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is taking a new systematic approach to asset management. This paper presents two facets of that approach, the Productivity Initiative Pilot Program andthe implementation of Maintenance Best Practices. In 2001, King County took on an innovative program called the Productivity InitiativeProgram to explore opportunities on how this traditional utility could be managed andoperated more like a business. For King County's wastewater treatment employees, thismeans providing the same high-quality services to the public that King County hasalways provided, and doing it with the right technology, human resources and fiscalplanning found in the business world today. To the public, this means WTD is committedto being more efficient, reducing costs and meeting the county's obligations to protectpublic health and the environment. One key component of the Productivity Initiative isthe Asset Management Pilot Program.
