A new system, Ionics EDR 2020, was recently commercialized. This system has a number of benefits for desalting wastewaters. This paper discusses two applications of desalting municipal effluent with electrodialysis reversal (EDR), one in Tenerife, Spain, and one in San Diego, California. The Ionics EDR 2020 system has demonstrated its applicability to desalting municipal effluent as well as potable and industrial wastewaters. The salt removal per stage is increased and the DC power consumption is minimized by use of the Mark IV stack. The pumping power is minimized and control is simplified by use of variable frequency drives. The 4-way valve reduces off-spec time and maximizes water recovery. Includes 6 references, tables, figure.
