Size exclusion membrane technology, ultra and microfiltration (UF/MF), offersexponentially increased rejection of pathogens from drinking water, but can beinefficient and costly due to fouling. The work presented in this paper consistedof: field determination of Memtec (MMF) and Zenon (ZMF) microfiltration membraneperformance on a highly organic surface water; and, development, testing, andverification of a water quality resistance model for describing fouling of sizeexclusion membranes. An alternative to reduce fouling of membranes is by theapplication of in-line coagulation (ILC). The process consists of injecting acoagulant into the raw water before it enters the membrane system. Differentcoagulants at different doses were used and evaluated with microfiltrationprocesses from Memtec and Zenon. The Hillsborough River (Tampa, Florida) wasevaluated in this study in conjunction with a USEPA project. Includes reference, tables, figures.
