Microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane processes havesignificantly changed the surface water treatment industry in a relatively shorttime. Seven years ago there was only one membrane surface water treatment plantgreater than 1 million gallons per day (mgd) in North America and now there areover 60 plants with an installed capacity in excess of 300 mgd. This paperdiscusses the development of MF/UF plants in North America and the variousproblem waters these plants are designed to treat. The paper includes a summarylist of these plants, as well as membrane-based wastewater reclamationfacilities, in the appendix including such data as location, capacity, startdate, type of membrane, membrane chemistry, configuration, flow pattern, level ofchlorine tolerance, description of pretreatment, and raw water source. Thelocations of the MF/UF membrane-based surface water treatment plants areidentified. Includes figures, appendix.
