Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are very effective at removing articles from sourcewaters. However, only nominal organic material removal is obtained unless thesource water is pretreated with a coagulant or other process to convert theorganic material to a particle or absorb them directly. This paper will cover the use of ozone addition to source water containing highorganic color to remove the color and reduce total organic carbon levels. This process creates a very small particle that can be removed with anultrafiltration (UF) membrane. In this case, ozone is used to break down theorganic molecules and to produce micro-bubbles that attract the organic matterlike a coagulant. Several studies have been completed including an ongoing study in the UnitedStates. The ability to reduce organic material and provide a microbial barrier willallow small to medium-sized water treatment systems to have a simple, automated process that accomplishes required treatment objectives. Results willbe reviewed to determine the efficiencies, potential conflicts and economics ofusing the ozone-UF treatment process for organic material removal andbiological contaminant removal of the product water for small to medium-sizedwater treatment facilities. Availability of ozone tolerant UF membranes makethis a feasible option for many water systems looking for some organic materialreductions while ensuring an effective microbial barrier. Includes 3 references, table, figures.
