Design of Integrated Membrane Systems (IMS) for treatment of groundwater and surfacewaters requires a detailed understanding of fouling mechanisms and fouling potential.This information is typically gathered through site-specific pilot testing and is timeconsuming and costly. Mathematical modeling and prediction of surface water nanofilterfouling mechanisms and fouling rates supports the application of diffusion-controlledmembranes to surface and groundwater supplies. While desktop modeling does notreplace pilot testing, it can support screening of alternative sources, sites, membranes andoperating conditions, in advance of pilot testing. This research addressed the role of individual fouling mechanisms on productivitydecline and fouling mitigation. Pilot study results from 15 months of testing on theHillsborough River in Tampa, Florida were utilized to compare various multivariatemathematical models. These models were evaluated for their ability to predict foulingdecline and to determine which model best fit the observed fouling rates. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
