This presentation documents the results of a pilot test of membrane filtrationtechnology for treatment of water from Jesse Creek and the Salmon River toproduce potable water for the City of Salmon, Idaho. The City is assessing thetechnology for retrofit into its existing direct filtration water treatmentplant. Over the past five years, membrane filtration has matured as a processwhich is ideally suited to meeting emerging federal drinking water regulationsfor surface water sources such as those used at the Salmon water treatment plant.Membrane filtration is considered an alternative surface water filtrationtechnology under the Idaho Administrative Code. Pilot testing is required to meetprovisions of Section 16.01.08 of the code. A Water Treatment Plant Facility Planprepared by CH2M HILL in 1999 recommended conversion from the existing directfiltration process to membrane filtration. Two general alternatives for doingthis were considered. One consists of installation of immersed membrane modulesinto the existing filter basins. The other involves use of skid-mountedconventional pressure-driven membrane modules. The Facility Plan identifiedmembrane filtration pilot testing as an integral part of the design process forexpansion and upgrade of the plant. Because significant differences in equipmentdesign and configuration exist between the various manufacturers of membranefiltration systems, design of improvements to the water plant can not becompleted until a decision is made on the process equipment to be used. The pilottesting described in this paper is part of the City's prequalification processfor selection of membrane filtration equipment vendor. Pilot test results will beused in final selection of the membrane filtration process for full-scaleapplication at the City's Water Treatment Plant. Includes tables, figures.
